WRITING IDEAS

One of my former students has provided a list of ideas for writing  narratives!

Here they are

-  My stomach turned upside down despite my numerous attempts at salvaging ______________ I had failed......

-The complex panel before me held all keys to the universe, if only I knew how to work the various blinking red lights and polished buttons..................

-It all made sense now.  My blindness throughout this entire journey led to sight.  I knew what I had to do....

-"Listen closely" it whispered, my growing fear turned into unreal terror as I eagerly scooted back into the cold, rocky wall.  Barely audible I spoke, "stop".  A low grumbling sound emerged from the creature's mangled body.  It knew its amount of power against me.  A silent tear rolled down my cheek.  I knew I was going to die......

-I felt a wide grin spread across my face, accomplishment was rewarding.  A bubbly feeling expanded inside of me, warmth radiating through my cheeks, forehead and arms.  Suddenly a subtle vibration threw off my balance, screams chorused through the grand hall.

WEEKLY BLOGPOST

After reading G. W.'s blog post about bucket lists, it gave me a great idea.

Your task is to create your own bucket list (10 things) and post it onto your blog.  Please describe why you chose each item.  Here is the beginning of mine.

Beginning of Mr. K's bucket list

1.  Visit Figi-  My wife and I have always wanted to travel to the beautiful country of Figi.  This will be difficult to accomplish as it is located on the other side of the world.  As well,  if I go on my summer vacation, the seasons are flipped making it their winter.

2.  Play golf at St. Andrews-  I enjoy watching and playing golf.  It is my dream to play at the "Old course" and walk across the Swilcan bridge just like Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson and many other legends.

To do List..

1. Math handout plus 3 equation problems on the blog.

2.  Math checkpoint tomorrow

3.  Math evaluation- Friday ( Algebraic Expressions & Algebraic Equations)

Summary- Fly Away Home

SUMMARY WRITING

The book “Fly Away Home” is written by Eve Bunting.  The main characters in the story are the dad and kid who is the narrator.  The boy’s father and the kid are homeless so they live in an airport.  They do their best to blend into the crowd and stay unnoticed.  One day the young boy becomes fixated with an injured bird that is desperately trying to get out of the airport.  Eventually the bird recovers enough to slip out a window that is open.  On weekends the father works as a janitor while the little boy and his friend Denny return luggage carts for a small amount of money.  The boy keeps all of his savings in his shoes.  Dad continues to try and find an apartment that he can afford but is unsuccessful.  The story ends with the boy thinking about how the bird preserved and eventually got out of the airport.  It reminds the boy of his own situation and gives him hope that one day he and his dad will be able to find their own place.

Half Brother- Reading Post

Our class is currently reading the book "Half Brother".  The book is written by Kenneth Opel.  The genre of this novel is realistic fiction.   Ben and his family have just recently moved to British Columbia from Toronto.  His family had to move there because his dad has taken a new position at the University.  His dad teaches Linguistics, and as a result he is asked to adopt a chimp and teach him American Sign Language.  When Ben's mom comes home with the chimp they name him Zan.  When their family goes to a barbecue, Ben's dad becomes concerned about having a good reputation in his new town.  As a result of this he makes Ben go to a private school called Windermere.  At the Barbeque he meets two friends named David and Jennifer Godwin.  They become very good friends and Ben develops a crush on Jennifer.  He is doing everything humanly possible to have Jennifer like him including "project Jennifer".  During all these events, Zan is learning ASL.  The Tomlins hire three students to take care of Zan while Ben's Mom and Dad are working on the study.  So far Zan has signed many words and has just signed one sentence.  Zan has also been featured in Time magazine and become a media sensation.

Paragraph 2 - Reading Strategies

Paragraph 3- Reflection ( Do you like the book? Post? Article? Why or why not?)

Reading Blog Entry

Dear Class,
I am currently reading Over the Edge by Norah McClintock.  The genre of this book is realistic fiction and, perhaps, a little mystery.
This book is about a girl named, Chloe.  Chloe lives in East Hasting.  She has recently moved to East Hasting from Montreal and she misses her former home a lot.  Chloe lives with her mom, her sister, Phoebe, and her step-dad, Levesque.  Levesque is the chief of police in Montreal.
One morning, Levesque gets a call telling him that a boy from Chloe’s school is missing.  His name is Peter Flosnick.  Levesque asks Chloe if she knows where he is, but Chloe tells him that she hardly talks to him at school.
At school that same day, everyone acts as if everything is normal, as if nothing has happened.  Chloe finds it unnerving that no one cares about Peter’s disappearance.  Peter is the kind of boy that is considered a “nerd” at Chloe’s school.  No one really pays much attention to him. Chloe, though, feels sorry for Peter.
After two days, Peter’s body is found at the bottom of MacAdam’s Lookout, a tall hill near the school.  Peter loved to study astronomy, so it was considered reasonable for him to have been at the top of the hill.  The authorities believe that Peter committed suicide.
When Chloe goes to Peter’s funeral, she sees his mom crying uncontrollably.  Chloe is overwhelmed with grief.
This is where I stopped reading.
As the author described the funeral, I could visualize it clearly because I had recently been to one.  I was able to make a direct connection - it reminded me of Sara’s brother’s funeral (Sara is a student in our class), and how grief-stricken her parents were when they laid her brother to rest.  I cried a lot that day.
I predict that Peter didn’t commit suicide.  I think that he was killed.  I think this because that’s the only way (in my opinion) that this story can go ahead.  I think that Chloe will try to find out who killed Peter.  The clues I have to support my prediction (I inferred meaning) are based on the way the other students acted.  I wonder if some of them were involved in his murder, or if they witnessed it and were too scared to tell the authorities what really happened.  Silence sometimes speaks volumes.
If Peter wasn’t murdered, could he have actually committed suicide?  Perhaps.  When the author said that Peter was considered a “nerd” at school, it made me wonder if he was picked on, and whether this abuse lead him to commit suicide.  I can make some more connections here, to articles we have recently read in class as part of our bullying unit.  I think it is completely wrong for someone to commit suicide but having read these articles, I have come to understand (synthesize) that bullying can cause not only physical pain but emotional and psychological pain that can lead someone to commit suicide.  If my original prediction is wrong and Peter was not killed, perhaps the rest of this book will be about bullying and how Chloe confronts bullies or bullying issues.
I can’t wait to read on.
                                Sincerely
Student J
